Double Time Calculator
Double time pays 2× your normal rate. Federal law never requires it — but California law, union contracts and holiday policies often do. Work out what your double-time hours are worth.
When is double time actually owed?
- California: hours over 12 in a single day, and hours over 8 on the seventh consecutive day of a workweek.
- Union contracts: many collective bargaining agreements set double time for Sundays, holidays, or after a daily threshold.
- Company policy: holiday and weekend double time is a common voluntary benefit — it's in your handbook, not the law.
- Never under the FLSA: federal law caps its requirement at time and a half, no matter how long the day or week.
Tax note: even when you're paid double time, the federal "no tax on overtime" deduction only counts a 0.5× premium for those hours — the same qualified amount as a time-and-a-half hour. Check yours with the
deduction calculator.
